These bearings are the same high-quality units that were supplied in the Bryan Aircraft HP-11 through HP-18 sailplane kits. They were manufactured to exacting AN specifications by Fafnir.

These aren't ordinary rod end bearings like you'd get from Heim or Aurora. The Fafnir RE3M6-2N actually features a self-aligning two-row ball bearing with twenty 1/8" balls as shown in the cataway drawing below. This precision ball bearing feature gives these units an expected life of 10,000 complete 90 degree cycles while subjected to a 1000-pound radial load. Try that with an oridnary rod end!

These bearing aren't only useful for rod ends, either. Bearings like these are also used as tail surface hinge bearings in at least one popular homebuilt design.
